Girls Soccer Wins Third in a Row

Mon, Dec 11th - OC played host to Arrowhead Christian Academy from Redlands for the first ever match up between the to schools. ACA is a CIF Southern Section Div 6 powerhouse program that pushed for the opportunity to play OC this season.

The Lions got things going with their first goal coming in the 9th minute. Kelsea beat a defender and made a beautiful pass to Casey who scored with a quick strike (1-0). For the remainder of the half the coaches were busy instructing, moving players around and substituting making the best of the teaching opportunity. The instructional effort paid dividends in the second half when the Lions pressured the ACA defence relentlessly with attack after attack. Hannah was knocked to the ground the in penalty box by the ACA goalie that resulted in a Penalty Kick opportunity for the Lions. Kelsea was given the honors and buried the ball into the right side of the second goal of the game in the 59th minute (2-0). A few moments later Hannah took the ball, weaved through defenders and delivered a picture perfect, field switching pass to Casey. Casey sent the ball through for Kelsea and a breakaway, one on one with the ACA keeper. Kelsea calmly scored again in the 62th minute to make the final score 3-0.

Oaks Christian has never lost to a CIF SS Div 6 school. The last time OC played a SS Div 6 school was the 2002-2003 season. OC all time record versus Arrowhead Christian Academy is 1-0-0 (w-l-t).

Kelsea now has three goals and two assists on the year and is leading the team in goals (3), assists - tied (2) and combined points (5). Kelsea's assist ties her for #5 career assists (29) and moves her into #5 for career points (62) in OC history.

Dasilva added a goal and an assist for her 2nd goal and 1st assist of the season. Her career totals are now 11 career goals and 8 career assists. Hannah's assist gives her 2 for the season and 23 for her career. Noelle tallied her 2nd season and 4th career shut out.

Girls Get it Going

Thu, Dec 7th the girls played the first home game of the year hosting Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. This was the second ever match up of these two schools, the first was game three of the 2001-2002 season. OC won that game 1-0 with a goal in the 64th minute from Alysha Hoven, OC's most prolific scorer.
This time the Lions wasted not time scoring in the 10th minute when freshman Kelly Johnson made a pass to Casey DaSilva, and Casey scored with an arcing shot that slipped under the cross bar. That was all the Lions would need as their defense held the Knights to no significant chances.
The defense has progressively solidified in the last four games as the players learn their new roles. OC traditionally starts the season slow as they have to familiarize themselves with each other ant the coach's roles for them in short term. They do not have a fall Phys Ed class to prep and often do not have many of their players in the first few weeks of practice. The Lions still have not practiced or played with the service of their top scorer Nicole Sweetman who looks to return at the end of next week.
Casey's goal is her 10th career goal and first for the season. Kelly's assist is her first ever as a OC Lion. Noelle Salter tallied her 3rd career shut out and first for the season.

Next up: Arrowhead Christian - Mon, Dec 11th @ OC's Thorson Stadium at 6:30 pm

Lions Victorious over the Valencia Vikings

For the fifth conscecutive year OC has played Valencia in an early season game. The Lions had tied twice and lost twice in the first four match ups, but this time the girls came home with the victory.
After surrendering a goal to the Vikings in the 29th minute the Lions responded with an equalizer in the 38th minute. Hannah MacKechnie coming off the bench to test her injured ankle destributed the ball to Kelsea who smoked past the defenders for a one on one with the goalkeeper. Smith placed the ball into the far post net to make the score 1-1.
After the halftime Melissa Dahl chased down a long ball and headed it to Kelsea who pooped a upper corner shot on goal. The Viking goalie made a great save, but Cislo was there to collect the rebound with a one-time shot into the net for the game winning goal.

Kelsea's goal gives her 32 for her career. This ties her for 6th all time in OC's history.

OC Face Early Challenges

The Lions have had their challenges early. Two games into the season their are still looking for their first goal and their first victory. They have faced Buena which has recently moved to Div 1 after dominating the CIF SS Div 2 and is Ventura County's premier program. Then they faced Canyon (Canyon Country) which is a CIF SS Div 2 powerhouse program. If the quality of the opponents is not tough enough, they played both teams short-handed. The Lions were missing the top 3 returning scorers Nicole Sweetman, Kelsea Smith and Hannah MacKechnie. Nicole and Kelsea have not been avaialable due to club commitments and Hannah is resting a ankle injury.

The storm is not over with a visit to Valencia (Valencia), a Div 2 team, that has never lost to OC and Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) a Div 1 program on the schedule this week. The Lions will travel to Valencia Wed, Dec 6th and host Notre Dame Thu, Dec 7th.

Currently OC girls soccer is on a three game losing streak, openning this season with losses to Buena and Canyon added to last season's loss to Granite Hills in the CIF SS Semifinals. The loss to GH prevented OC from qualifying for its fourth consecutive CIF SS Final. This is only the second time in OC history that they have lost three in a row, the last time came in 2002. Spring of 2002 in the CIF SS Quarterfinals OC had its 22 consecutive game winning streak stopped when they lost to eventual champions Pasadena Poly. The next Fall the season openned with three consecutive losses (Valencia, St Bonaventure and Atascadero) to extend the streak to four straight losses. OC rebounded and ended the 2002-2003 season with the first of its four Frontier League titles and the first of its three consecutive CIF SS titles. Not to mention started a 47 game undefeated streak versus CIF SS D5 schools.

With Valencia and Notre Dame coming up next the Lions may still have some tough times, but will likely respond to the lessons as a result.

History:
OC vs. Valencia, 0-2-2 (w-l-t)
OC vs. Notre Dame, 1-0-0
